Our objective is to protect high streets across the UK and Ireland and to support local retailers. By working with leading independent retail jewellers and quality suppliers, we empower our retail members so that they can remain where they belong – at the heart of every town centre.
The buying power of the CMJ ensures that independent retailers benefit from marketing-leading commercial advantages, greater levels of product availability, and access to limited stock and exclusive product lines and deals. We reduce the amount of work retailers need to put into sourcing not only leading brands and products but also critical service and operational providers such as insurance and security, by doing this on their behalf. Our members also benefit from a single point of invoicing and payment each month, rather than having to co-ordinate individual administration with each supplier.
Despite the challenges that Covid-19 brought to the independent sector, the pandemic sparked a demand to shop local and support independent business. Throughout the pandemic, we saw a shift in shopping trends where consumers valued community and quality over convenience and cost. Whilst online sales soared, connecting with local retailers moved to the forefront of consumers minds and gave independents’ the opportunity to prove their place on the high street again. At the CMJ, we arm our independent retailers with the knowledge, data and materials necessary to champion this movement and protect the high street.
As an organisation, we work in close partnership with leading jewellery industry associations, such as the National Association of Jewellers (NAJ) and the Natural Diamond Council, as well as initiatives such as Save the High Street. We also have close links with jewellery specialist trade press including Retail Jeweller and Professional Jeweller magazines.
The CMJ is a keen supporter of initiatives to celebrate independent retail jewellers. We have been the headline partner of Retail Jeweller’s Inspiring Independents event for many years, and have also sponsored categories at the prestigious annual UK Jewellery Awards. Experienced members of our team have also had the honour of being invited to be part of the judging panel for the ceremony, which is dubbed “the Oscars of the jewellery industry”. In 2021, we are sponsoring the Retail Team of the Year category at the UK Jewellery Awards, and our Head of Marketing, Frances Hopes, has once again been invited to be a judge.
