Retailers benefit from sales training at CMJ’s Oakham Growth & Learning Network event

The 2019 CMJ regional meetings have taken on a new and exciting format with a style that is very different from the previous meetings. Rebranded the CMJ Growth and Learning Network, the events have been designed to provide a platform for CMJ Retail Members and CMJ Approved Suppliers to develop relationships, share ideas and experience something new.

A total of 11 days out have been scheduled between March and October, helping members and suppliers gain insights and transferable skills from a range of industries. Each event on the tour will have its own theme and activities, ranging from making your own sword to touring innovative retailers .  The events are also the perfect opportunity to bring together members, as well as suppliers, from across the UK and Ireland for invaluable networking opportunities.

In April, members gathered at the Barnsdale Hall Hotel, which overlooks the charming Rutland countryside in Oakham. Industry specialist Jo Henderson of JHJ Consultancy gave a talk on sales techniques and developing the customer journey in-store. CMJ’s Phil Ainsworth and former executive director of business development and marketing, Lucy Reece-Raybould, then shared insights with members on the latest jewellery and watch trends. The afternoon saw an open networking discussion, where members deliberated on current industry challenges.

Jeremy Fournel, of Fournel Jewellers, in Suffolk, said the day provided “insightful discussion [about] other businesses,” while Tony Doubleday, of Melton Mowbray-based Pearces the Jewellers, said the day was “informative with open discussions by like minded retailers. Most certainly would recommend”.

Business owners are not the only people who can benefit from our events, there are also opportunities for other senior staff members to grow their skills and gain insights. After experiencing April’s Oakham event, Claire Hunt of Stanley Hunt Jewellers in Nottinghamshire said she would “encourage members to bring their managers to give them a better understanding of what we get involved in within the business.”

Future events for members and approved suppliers to take advantage of include a tour of Bombay Sapphire in Laverstock on Thursday, May 16th; an innovative tour of independent retailers in Liverpool city centre on Wednesday, May 22th; and boating trips with Approved Suppliers Elliot Brown Watches and Garmin on June 4th and 5th.
